According to the SF city planners, RUSTY'S FORT is considered a historic building.

The owners requested a permit to demo the building at 1819 Mason Street but the permit was denied by city planning. City planning claims the building, also known as Rusty's Fort, is a historic building and cannot be demo'd. The DBI claims the building should be demo'd because it's not structurally sound. Since 2005, complaints have been filed with the DBI about the dilapidated condition of this property and nothing was done. If something was done by the DBI then, maybe the owners would have done something that could have helped with the preservation of the building. San Fran building owners are responsible for maintaining their property so why does the owner of this property continue to get away with not paying city fines or obeying city ordinances? Enough is enough!!! We were not able to save the historic trees that were illegally cut down on this lot but we may be able to save the historic building. 30 Days is Soooooo Far Past

Calls have been made to Ed Sweeney (415) 558-6272 Senior Inspector, Code Enforcement to try to get someone at the DBI to do something to enforce the 30-day abatement to clean up the lot. Nothing has been done to clean up the lot, therefore the owners are in voilation and should be fined everyday the lot is not within compliance.

Update, as of 7/9 still no action taken by the DBI.

As of 6/20, the building inspectors office is under the impress that the lot has been cleaned up. We need to let them know that nothing noticeable has been done to the lot. Call John Yam 558-6624 at the DBI regarding complaint #200564020 1819 Mason street property and file another complaint (or just complain). Thank you.

Public Hearing Thursday 5/24 at 9:30AM at 1660 Mission Street

There will be a Director'sHearing on May 24, 2007 at 9:30AM in Room 2001 at 1660 Mission Street.

The hearing notice was posted on the fence on Mason Street May 10th but removed shortly after. The notice did state that the owner missed a previous hearing that had been called regarding the property back in October/November.

There are 2 inspectors working on the lot complaint #200564020, James Li 415-558-6521 and John Yam 415-558-6624. Both inspectors and they claim that the owner of the property said that the lot had been cleaned up and some trees trimed. By looking at the lot, it's evident that this is not true. Nothing has been done to clean up the lot and the trees were not trimed, they were cut down.

SF Building Inspector said that this shack/building cannot be demolished until the owner submits building development plans and they are approved by the city.

If this lot is going to sit in limbo, the neighbors want the city to take action to have the owner clean up the debris in the lot, fix up the building or conceal it by installing a higher fence and replacing some of the trees that were illegally cut down.
