At the 5/24 Hearing, Owners are Told to Clean Up Lot in 30-Days

Update, as of 7/9 still no action taken by the DBI.

As of 6/20, the building inspectors office is under the impress that the lot has been cleaned up. We need to let them know that nothing noticeable has been done to the lot. Call John Yam 558-6624 at the DBI regarding complaint #200564020 1819 Mason street property and file another complaint (or just complain). Thank you.

1819 Mason Street Tree Removal without Permits

Dear Neighbors: On March 5, 2007 trees were destroyed without permits at 1819 Mason Street. In San Francisco, tree removal requires an inspection by the Department of Public Works and permit(s). If a permit is granted, it must be posted for a period up to 30 days. If objections to the removal are received, a public hearing is scheduled. Since there were no permits to remove trees at 1819 Mason Street, neighbors were not able to object to or attend a public hearing to save the trees. Now is your chance to be heard. Currently, there are no permits to build on the lot therefore it could look “as is” for a long time. This property already has a compliant filed against it from 2005 stating, “Inside looks like a junk yard people throw garbage inside, attracts rodents” but the complaint had nothing to do with the trees. Actually, the trees were beautiful, made the neighborhood feel less urban, cleaned the air, were a resting spot for the wild parrots and other birds, and had been residing in the neighborhood longer that most residents. Unfortunately, a selfish decision was made and they were cut down in a matter of hours after years of growing and living. The owner of 1819 Mason Street destroyed a large pine significant tree, fruit and magnolia trees and 2 pine trees that are excessively pruned and will probably not grow back.

“Street trees are important assets of neighborhoods and commercial districts. The citizens of San Francisco value street trees and have mandated their protection. Called, significant trees, these trees are within 10 feet of the public right-of-way and also meet one of the following size requirements: 20 feet or greater in height, 15 feet or greater canopy width, 12 inches or greater diameter of trunk measured at 4.5 feet above grade. These trees are granted the same protections as street trees, and a permit is required before any street tree or significant tree – alive, dead or hazardous – can be removed. Tree removal without a permit is a violation of Article 16 of the Public Works code."
